A car battery is designed to handle a quick and intense surge and then not be used again until you restart your engine. A deep-cycle marine battery is designed to be completely drained then completely recharged. A solar battery is designed to handle the steady, slow discharge and recharge that we do with solar energy. Although 12V is 12V, purchasing the right type of battery (solar) will make a much better system. One of the biggest complaints we hear from customers is that they purchased deep-cycle marine batteries because they were less expensive; however, they have to replace them every 12-18 months. These customers converted to solar batteries and saved a lot of money over the next several years.
